Newspapers, Games...
Since the beginning of the semester, my media consumption has changed dramatically. I began the semester, transferring into the department from science majors. Needless to say, the only media I was really a part of involved textbooks and journals. I have always been a gamer, but only when time permitted, which was not very often.

Now being in the MCom department, I find it both necessary, and more interesting to be a stronger, more aware media consumer. I have primarily increased my media consumption through reading more magazines and using the internet more often for both entertainment, and as an informational resource. I actually regularly now check the mercury news online more often than I pick up the newspaper. I hate admitting that one, but I have a laptop now, so it is just as convenient as picking up the paper, well…more convenient.

I have also begun my video game playing a little more, because of the Nintendo Wii release, and have enjoyed it very much! Similarly, I have continued to increase my interest and knowledge in music, studying more on the industry, and not just listening to music. I think the recent closing of Tower Records upset me, and really got me thinking.

As for blogging, I have made a definite transformation. I definitely still have work to do to become more aware in the entire blog world, and I have decided to continue with my blog. With more time on my hands during winter break, I look forward to understanding everything even further. Blogging is something I would have never expected to get into recreationally, and I look forward to other great exposures that will only further my learning in the MCom Department.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-80392407045358865842006-12-14T00:55:00.000-08:002006-12-14T03:22:02.351-08:00I Pod or No Pod?!
When students leave the classroom they can most commonly be seen on their cell phone, or strapping on their I Pod to hear some tunes between classes. It actually took me quite a bit of time to buy an I Pod, one because of the outrageous prices, and two because I am always worried that as soon as I buy one, they will release a smaller and better one. This past year I finally got the Nano for my birthday, but recently I have noticed myself leaving my I Pod at home, and sticking to the music that can be stored on my phone. With the technology of phones increasing, I am interested to see not if, but how quickly Macintosh’s I Pods will become obsolete.

It is obvious that Macintosh has picked up on this issue considering the new release of the I Pod shuffle that can clip onto your belt or pocket. The only two things Macintosh has to offer are size, and memory. If they continue to make it easier to put videos on the I Pod, they may keep selling product.

However, now phones aren’t the only competition. The Zune has now been released. Many relate it to a Macintosh vs. PC. This Zune is fully equipped with FM radio, and has a 3 inch screen, while the I Pod Video has a 2.5 inch screen. The Zune also allows the sharing of music. One can share music with another Zune wirelessly within thirty feet. Not only does it allow this sharing, but it erases the shared music after three days or three listenings, attempting to control illegal sharing of music. If that does not satisfy your music needs, they also offer a monthly $15 unlimited music downloading service. It is comparable in price, and is also stylish.

It is obvious to say, that if the Macintosh team wants to see the I Pod continue they are going to need innovation!!
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-29391207232054935262006-12-13T22:00:00.000-08:002006-12-13T22:48:14.068-08:00Image Fading Away...Get Your Own Perfume!
Recently, with holiday shopping at its highest nothing has stood out more to me than commercials and programs involving gift giving. However, while Oprah is promoting GAP’s Red line, and other daytime hosts are offering tips on toys, all I have been able to notice is the flood of commercials promoting colognes and perfumes. Why is it the next big thing for falling celebrities to put out their own line of perfume? They are everywhere!!

This past Monday, I was watching a one hour program, and I began counting the mass amounts of commercials for colognes made by celebrities such as Antonio Banderas, Britney Spears, and Hilary Duff. While these are the commercials that were shown during my program other celebrities with perfumes and colognes include Michael Jordan, Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton, Sarah Jessica Parker, and the list has become endless!

Not only do celebrities release these items, but where has Antonio Banderas been? Other than Puss in Boots from Shrek, this cologne is the first I have seen from him in a while!! I firmly believe that putting out colognes is a big red flag for, I am fading away as a celebrity…so please buy my product?! So this holiday season…do you want to smell like Britney, or Paris?!
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-24550674218588400642006-12-07T08:35:00.001-08:002006-12-07T08:35:58.696-08:00Why I Appreciate Alarm Clocks!
I think this blog calls for my sometimes disliking of technology. While technology makes our lives go far faster and more efficiently, we are far too reliant on the resource, and I am a prime example of this!! As a 21 year old college student, I use my cell phone for just about everything. I email on it, text message, listen to music, and even use it as an alarm clock. This morning I had a meeting at <st1:time minute="0" hour="9">9:00</st1:time>, and for a college student, yes, this is far earlier than I would like to wake up. As I arrived to the conference room I noticed the campus seemed emptier, but shrugged my shoulders and viewed it as college students burnt out the week before finals. I then arrived at the conference room, and thought interesting, they are always early to meetings! It was only a matter of minutes until my eyes were glued to the clock on the wall reading <st1:time minute="10" hour="8">8:10</st1:time>. I glanced at my phone, <st1:time minute="10" hour="9">9:10</st1:time>, the clock on the nearby coffee pot, <st1:time minute="10" hour="8">8:10</st1:time>. Sure enough my phone is incorrect, and I have an hour to lounge around and write about my upset tired eyes that desperately wanted that extra hour of sleep. I apologize if this blog seems substance free, but it actually has a great point…no technology can beat a good old alarm clock. Another way to look at the situation…at least satellites didn’t have it going an hour late!!
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-64652305872938459232006-11-30T17:13:00.000-08:002006-11-30T17:15:03.297-08:00Who's Bowling?!
One of the most significant and interesting forms of advertising and promotion that I have seen in the past few weeks is involved with college athletics. As you hopefully know already, SJSU football has made quite a recovery this year, and has just agreed to play in the New Mexico Bowl this <st1:date year="2006" day="23" month="12">December 23, 2006</st1:date>. When researching more about the bowls I was intrigued by the amount of money companies spend on having their name on a bowl. A prime example of this is the fiesta bowl sponsored by Tostitos held in Glendale Arizona.

With these bowls the companies sponsoring them pay out the teams invited anywhere from $750,000 to $17 million. While these numbers seem huge, the bowls are constructive for the company or organization hosting them. These games become so popular that they are referred to more by the company they represent than the teams that are playing. Bowls like the Fiesta bowl or the Sugar bowl are known to have great teams in attendance, and people may purchase tickets for them, far before the teams playing are determined. These games are generally all sell outs, and people may travel thousands of miles to participate in them or to support a team. They view these bowls as a way to bring tourism to different cities, and a way to advertise across the nation bringing together well known teams that sports fans want to see play each other.

College football rankings do factor into what teams are invited, but in the end the companies have the final call with invitations. A full listing of the Bowls can be found at CollegeFootballPoll. Have a Problem
So each time I write about video games, I swear it will be the last time, but I have more to say…so no more promises! I have recently been playing the new Nintendo system, the Wii. I gave a brief glimpse of how the system works on my October 24th blog. Anyways, this new system is interactive meaning if you are playing a game of tennis you actually swing the remote (also referred to as a Wiimote) as if you had a raquet in you hand. It really is awesome, and it is so easy for anyone to play!

The thing that is so great about it, and I promised I would not publicly mention this, but I have been sore from the waist up from all of the interesting ways this system has me moving. (You know you need to hit the gym when…) I think it is great that a system has been released like this one. Even though it is very minimal work, it beats sitting on the couch and getting sore thumbs!

While this aspect of the Wii has been great there have also been a series of complaints about the system. I personally can relate to what others are complaining about…I almost broke a finger playing tennis!! I followed through too much on my swing, and hit a wooden chair! I have not had pain like this in a while!! Others have been breaking television screens, making holes in walls and more! You have to check this out! Wii have a problem. Haha…I still can’t get enough of it.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-74601462205339293862006-11-30T15:05:00.000-08:002006-11-30T15:06:09.749-08:00Inspi(RED)
Recently, the GAP Red collection has been seen all over advertisements, on celebrities, and in every day conversation. In case you haven’t yet heard of the Red Campaign, it is a campaign through GAP, supporting the fight against AIDS. Half of the proceeds from each Red Product purchase goes to the fund to fight AIDS.

Last Monday, in my PR 99 class, a woman came to speak to our class explaining the campaign or project. Bono from U2 is the primary supporter of this project, and she had wonderful things to say about him. The entire presentation was great, and it really made you want to go out and support the cause.

A primary product they offer are the red colored tees that have a word written on them. Words that may be as such: Desi(red), Bor(ed), Ti(red), Inspi(red), etc. They have many other products as well that aren’t necessarily red in color, but Red in significance.

Faces that can be seen representing the products include Steven Spielberg, Penelope Cruz, Chris Rock, Dakota Fanning, and more! Other brands also helping the fund include Verizon Wireless which offers a Red phone, I Pod, Armani, Converse, and American Express. Oprah has also contributed two shows to promoting the line, and has increased sales for the products tremendously. It is a great campaigning idea, and it is a wonderful way to help a cause that needs support!
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-71257834258530713062006-11-20T17:24:00.000-08:002006-11-20T17:25:24.593-08:00Life, Death, and the Playstation 3
So I am completely aware that I talk about video games far too much, but I experienced things this past weekend that are completely blog worthy. All of the action happened when desperately attempting to purchase the Playstation 3 and the new Nintendo Wii.

This past Friday, November 17, the Playstation 3 was released. While many had already camped out to preorder the game unit, others, like myself, were searching around the day or days prior to Friday in hopes of scoring the new system. I began my journey at Walmart in which those in line had been stationed there since Wednesday morning. As I continued to different Targets and Best Buys I noticed that mostly everyone in position to purchase the Playstation had been there since TUESDAY!!

I finally stationed myself at the Market Target in which hundreds of people waited for a lottery of which eight lucky gaming consumers could purchase the system. I really can not explain how crazy the fight was for these systems costing $600!

I personally was trying to purchase one to resell on ebay. As much as I would have loved to play on the system, I simply viewed it as tuition money.

All in all it is very interesting to see the society of which we live. People are willing to sacrifice so much time and money for a game system. On another aspect, companies like Playstation, have consumers frenzied for a unit, only releasing a total of 400,000. It is an interesting industry, and this past weekend only further reinforced that.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-73813720383444572702006-11-14T23:10:00.000-08:002006-11-14T23:32:24.335-08:00Too Much Sex IN the City
After hearing the presentation about Sex and the City I think there is a large aspect of it’s impact on society that may have been skipped over. (I say may because of the time shortage). While Sex and the City did open a door for “liberating” women and hopefully working toward less of a double standard, it also broke down all morally straight foundation that may have been set for the younger population of viewers. Girls in high school idolize these women, and as far as I am concerned, that may be the end to any sort of independence from men. Women do not need to have a husband or significant other that they constantly tend to, but these women drag it to a completely different form of dependence on men. The concept of showing successful, independent, childless women could have been a great start toward refining the female image, but instead 16 year old girls have Samantha listed as the Sex and the City Character most like them.

While the glamorization of this constant party life was lightly addressed in the presentation, this group of women are conveying a lifestyle that is really not realistic, feasible, or healthy. Not to say the producers weren’t successful, it is far more entertaining to watch a woman under the influence of god knows what, taking a different man home every night over the daily life of the Cleaver Family; not to mention...the show title is Sex and the City...not Women and the City!
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-92220949704647748602006-11-14T00:21:00.001-08:002006-11-14T00:21:57.157-08:00International Cell Phones
Cellular phones have become a large advancement in the United States. We are now allowed to hold music, videos, take pictures, AND call people on our cell phones. However, people in various other countries have phones that surpass any that are sold in the United States. A new Motorola Phone can be purchased through export cell phone companies such as ImportGSM. This phone, the Motorola V3X, contains various high tech abilities, such as 2 way video calling and a 2 mega pixel camera. This phone will not be available in the United States for some time. However, it is available from international cellular phone consumers. The reason international phone companies can release these phones so much earlier than United States phone companies is the network that they are running on. The United States has spent a large amount of there time on developing a network that can run sufficiently to the needs of the American consumer. The international world does not have to create such a large network for their country. For example, the size of South Korea’s network is greatly smaller than the United States. This smaller network allows them to spend a majority of their time on developing and testing more advanced phones. International countries have better phones due to their more intense research on new technology for phones.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-77965200486671782062006-11-08T22:54:00.000-08:002006-11-08T22:55:37.262-08:00The Most Beautiful Ugly
When looking at the different international websites, and when viewing how different media is from country to country or even state to state I found myself searching all of the internet for different aspects of media other than news. One of the aspects in television that I found interesting, and of course a bit humorous, was the Spanish Soap Operas. Non-Spanish speaking, and many Spanish speaking, Americans have a tendency to stop on the programs to laugh or chuckle at the flamboyant approach to entertainment.

That is exactly how this form of media serves the Spanish speaking countries, as their main form of entertainment. Soap Operas are the largest form of entertainment, and are aired daily during prime time hours from <st1:time minute="0" hour="19">7-10:00 pm</st1:time>. Each soap opera runs for an hour, Monday through Friday, making three television shows dominating all of the prime time slots. Later at <st1:time minute="0" hour="22">10:00 pm</st1:time> they have shows that run as our night time television does.

One show in particular has now actually been transformed into a U.S. version because of its popularity. The show is La Fea Mas Bella, and it revolves around a young woman trying to survive in the demanding lifestyle of the business world. She has braces, and glasses and has difficulty finding a job because of her looks. The U.S. version is called Ugly Betty, and is also popular. Therefore, the soap operas that were once chuckled at maybe offered with a different approach in the U.S., but are offering the same messages to two different communities.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1162926215366083032006-11-07T11:02:00.000-08:002006-11-07T12:01:07.123-08:00Campaigning and Advertising
As mentioned earlier advertising is everywhere. Lately there has been a new form of advertising, that being for the elections occurring this Tuesday, November 7th. In the past I have recalled advertising for these elections as billboards, signs, pins, poster, and commercials. This year however, I have found that advertising for these campaigns made a dramatic turn. It is always typical to slander an opponent, but I have found more than ever that many commercials slander the opponent as a tactic rather than glorifying one’s self. While both forms will essentially influence somebody, it seems like a middle school way of handling the campaign. In my mind it makes the candidate or candidates less reputable. As a voter I want to see what the candidate will offer me, not the down falls or mistakes of another.

Another aspect of campaigning that I found this year was the use of political icons or the use of celebrity to promote specific propositions. An example of this was Bill Clinton’s campaign in support of prop 87. Even on myspace there have been advertisements with Bill Clinton’s face in support 87. While Bill Clinton is not typically considered a celebrity, he is an ex president and a political icon. It is not typical to see much of ex presidents after their terms, and now he is an icon for this particular proposition.

It is amazing how much money is spent on campaigning…hopefully all will go out and take advantage of their right to vote.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1162458783437655472006-11-02T01:11:00.000-08:002006-11-07T12:01:07.066-08:00So...About Annoying Advertisements
Advertising is one of the key aspects of media. The reason for this, is a company’s ability to screen advertising on any type of media. You can advertise in magazines, on T.V., on the radio, and the list continues. While this is ideal for a company or advertiser it is many times insanely annoying for a consumer, you can’t escape them. For entertainment purposes I am going to review some of the worst aspects of Advertising through highlighting some of the most annoyingly effective advertising campaigns.

The first is the Snappelope. Right when all consumer victims thought Slim Jim could go no lower and no more annoying than the Randy Savage “Snap into a Slim Jim” campaign, they introduced a snappelope! I don’t know what this creature is, but it is scary! Perhaps it is the animal in which they get their meat? I lost sleep over those horrific commercials!

Another annoyingly effective add campaign are the Vonage ads. Woohoo woo hoo hoo…woo hoo woo hoo hoo woo hoo woo hoo woo hoo…I think I have said enough about this one! If you know what I am referring to…good luck removing song from your head!!

The worst part of this entire process is the advertisement agencies completely got what the commercials!
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1162458683194271332006-11-02T01:10:00.000-08:002006-11-07T12:01:07.003-08:00PR and Blogging
Public relations is a difficult field in the aspect of making all parties satisfied. While a company has many expectations of a PR firm or campaign, the PR firm always has to consider the public. Because a large focus of this course is blogging, I want to consider how wonderful blogging is as a form of Public Relations.

As a student in the department of Journalism, and as a Board member for Associated Students I have become increasingly aware of how politics, and maybe even the “real world” works. As a member of A.S. it can be…intimidating(?) knowing that the newspaper has strong control over how I, or others, are representing Associated Students and the student of SJSU. It is easy to nicely comment on something, and it is even easier for a journalist to quote one in a manner that sounds nothing like the original intent of the message.

It is crucial to have some form of check, and it is crucial to feel a sense of insecurity, it only makes you work that much harder, but it is relieving to have a blog in which one, or a company can express efforts and the work that is being accomplished.

Blogging is essentially an open forum for a company to show exactly how their efforts are benefiting the consumer. It is a free and easy way to not only shine light on the company’s efforts, but to advertise as well. All in all, it is quite convenient when a trend is easily transformed into an effective field of work.

JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1161714552124837352006-10-24T11:25:00.000-07:002006-11-07T12:01:06.944-08:00Vidette?
Technology changes daily, therefore the internet and what is offered through or on the internet changes just as quickly! Similar to the internet and computers, gaming and video games is a continuously growing field. The new Play Station 3 is to be released soon, and is currently running on Ebay for thousands of dollars. Not only do gamers want these products, they want them quick!!

In association with the internet, games like World of Warcraft have virtually transformed gaming into a social network as well. While there are other games of the same concept, gamers have an addiction to this game of World of Warcraft also referred to as WOW.
Players are battling friends, of which they may have never physically met, and now have the option of selecting “one player” but not challenging the computer, and rather challenging others through the internet! It really is a great concept.

It is amazing what video games have become. Nintendo is releasing the Nintendo Wii on November 19. It has already gone on presale, and you could drive by any local EB Games, and see gamers camping out for the pre sale. Anyways, the Nintendo Wii has motion censored controls. With these controls rather than pressing a button to jump, you can hold the controller in one hand, jump, and the game character will jump. I personally enjoy videogames, but their advancements are almost overwhelming, at least on my wallet!!
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1161710451126432382006-10-24T10:20:00.000-07:002006-11-07T12:01:06.882-08:00Who's Crazy?!
There are many aspects of the internet that have caused many to go kind of crazy on many different levels. There are two main types of this “crazy.” The first type of crazy is the type that is completely hooked to the internet. The only form of communication with others is either through an Instant Messaging system, or through their online networking game such as World of Warcraft. They are most commonly found with dark circles weighing down on their eyes. Their coloring may be quite pale, maybe from lack of sunlight, I’m not quite sure. While these are definite exaggerations, a majority of our population completely relies on the internet, which brings me to the next “crazy.”

There is another large population that declares the internet as an evil. These people may or may not have a computer. They also use the internet, but many times just do not know enough about it, and rather than learning they point out a decent list describing why the internet has either corrupted society or controls our society. While they may bring up many valid points, they too will soon become a part of the world in the world wide web!

JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1161104795187807032006-10-17T10:05:00.000-07:002006-11-07T12:01:06.818-08:00Who Said T.V. is Only Entertainment?!
Unfortunately, and almost sadly, it took me a quite a while to figure out the three shows that I find most important, but I think I’ve got it. I believe that Dr Phil, The Simpson’s, and Queer as Folk are three important television programs.

As cheesy as it may sound, I truly believe that Dr. Phil is an important television program. Dr. Phil was one of the first shows that made people desire to, and find entertainment out of seeking personal advice. There are many embarrassing, emotional, and real topics that are discussed on this program. The program allows others to see that either others have similar, or worse problems and asking for advice is ok.

As goofy as it may seem, The Simpson’s was and is also an important show. The Simpson’s allowed a younger crowd as well as adults to enjoy a sometimes outrageous cartoon with hidden meaning. Most of the Simpson shows do offer a historic, political, or controversial topic through all of the dry and sometimes vulgar humor. This is a cartoon that has been ongoing season after season, and it is because adults can enjoy the more mature humor and meaning, and a younger crowd can still watch the cartoon. It really is clever how they find ways to make it a history lesson.

As unrealistic as many of these shows seem, shows such as Queer as Folk and The L Word are also important. These shows have give the queer community a voice. While sometimes the nightly partying and random hook ups seem a little out there, people find connections with the characters, and the GLBTQ community is connected to. These shows cross all boundaries, and cover a wide range of topics including hate crimes, death, sickness, single sex marriage and adoption, and more.

JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1160633157843926622006-10-11T23:05:00.000-07:002006-11-07T12:01:06.763-08:00Stirring up talk!
There are typically three apparent viewpoints among Howard Stern followers. The first standpoint on Howard Stern is that he is appalling, and anyone in his or her right mind should also be appalled by his work. The second standpoint of Stern is that he is crude and far too explicit but secretly he or she believes Stern is a radio and comic God. These followers are most commonly found listening to Stern through a headset or alone in their car nervous of how loudly they are playing the radio show. Then there are followers, such as my mom, that view Stern as an innovative, dirty, hilarious, talk show Mozart.

As for my standpoint, I view Howard Stern as an innovative radio spokesperson. Howard Stern was one of the first radio celebrities to get people talking on the radio, and was able to grasp them. There were many aspects of the show such as Street Jeopardy in which Stern would address a significant issue (the ignorance and stupidity of our nations commoners), but bring it forth in an entertaining way. Stern was offensive, and because of this either initiated conversation, or simply entertained. There is no doubt that Stern crossed lines of race, sexuality, religion, socio-economic status, and far more, but people reacted to it, and in that sense he was successful in making the radio a communication medium.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1159898071458827072006-10-03T10:53:00.000-07:002006-11-07T12:01:06.699-08:00One Simple Device
In the past many weeks, we have discussed many forms of media including books, magazines, newspapers, music, and more. Within this time we have also found that the same type of media can be found in various forms. However, what if I told you that almost every form of media could be found in one simple device, and that you probably already own it!

It is amazing to me how the modern day cell phone encompasses so many forms of media. One of the first types of media in our history was the newspaper, and now we can get news feeds through our phone. The next major form of media was the radio, and yes, there are many cell phones of which the plug of a headset will tune you into your favorite radio station. Cell phones can contain your favorite music files so you can dispose of your walk man! Don’t have a way to check your email? Use your cell phone!

On a different level, the advertising that goes along with cell phone distributors is also amazing! Why does everybody have a Motorola Razor? There are still many cell phone companies that are working to gain customers so there are still clever campaigning, and new deals. There still is not necessarily book access or magazine access outside of that of which you can research online. It is amazing however, how much media we receive through such a small device.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1159486466310097852006-09-28T16:32:00.000-07:002006-11-07T12:01:06.629-08:00The Kite Runner...Propaganda?!
For many the word Propaganda strikes visions of Hitler, communism, or corrupt campaigns. It is a word that owns a distinctively negative connotation. It is a powerful word, because it influences and controls the mind set and decision making for an individual and or for large populations. According to the Merriam- Webster Online Dictionary propaganda is defined as “ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one’s cause or to damage an opposing cause. A public action having such an effect.” While this definition does not necessarily emphasize it, propaganda’s power can also positively influence an individual or population. In this way, I view San Jose State’s deliberate implementation of Kite Runner as “good” propaganda, allowing many oppressed groups to be seen and heard, and to shape the readers’ perspectives of Afghanistan.

When referring to the Merriam- Webster definition of propaganda the word, deliberate is used to describe how the ideas, facts, or allegations are spread. In this sense, San Jose State has used the campus reading program and the novel to deliberately spread an idea or even more, a perspective. For the 2006-2007 academic year, San Jose State’s living and learning theme is Diversity. Because SJSU has such a large population of different people, people of color, gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status, etc. use of the campus reading program is a promising way of grasping students, faculty, and staff.

As in many settings, institutions, and minds when referring to diversity many resort to a black and white image, and if not black and white it is typical to be only associated with race and color. Through implementing a novel such as Kite Runner a different culture and lifestyle is introduced to the SJSU community. Not only a different culture, but a culture that has many levels of negative views associated with it. Within Kite Runner there are many aspects of diversity that are introduced including the treatment of children, women, elderly, and ethnic groups. Because SJSU is determined to spread diversity, the novel Kite Runner deliberately aided in conveying this message.

On a larger scale, this novel holds strong impact in changing how many view Afghanistan and the citizens of Afghanistan. Since 9-11 and the War on Terrorism different perspectives and ideas float among our population of who is oppressed, how that impacts the U.S., and how the U.S. should or should not be aiding. After 9-11 many viewed all citizens of Afghanistan to be part of the Taliban, terrorists. As the war began, and as time began to heal wounds, large portions of the U.S. population grew more educated of the situation over seas, but were and still are blind to the situation. This novel gives insight as to the transformation of the country over decades. More importantly it gives insight on how “invisible” groups are oppressed, as well as more obvious groups such as women.

It is typical to associate oppression in Afghanistan with the oppression of women, and only of women. Prior to reading the novel typically the only form of oppression emphasized in association with Afghanistan was that women must cover their faces, that women should not speak, and that women must marry he whom her father chooses. After reading the novel one sees the oppression of children. The author in detail explains the lifestyle of children forced to live in orphanages because their parents have been killed or were separated from them. Not only are children not taken care of in orphanages, but they are used by leaders as either servants or sex objects. Another oppressed group mentioned in the novel are the Hazaras. We see the oppression of this group even through loved ones. While Amir’s father, referred to as Baba, has his half Hazara son, and loves him, he hides this identity and allows Hassan to act as a servant in his home. Even in the schools Amir’s teachers would preach to frown upon those of which are Hazara. These are just a few examples of discrimination facing Afghans. These are the points that the author must emphasize and refer to, in order to educate and gain sympathy for the narrator and for this nation.

One way of which propaganda is successfully implemented is through the use or abuse of human emotion. One emotion that controls the thoughts of and the actions of people is sympathy, and compassion. The novel Kite Runner reaches out to the audience through the use of children. In the first half of the novel the narrator describes his life and the life of his friend Hassan, as children. The narrator grasps the readers’ sympathy by explaining the life of Hassan and Hassan’s father as Hazaras in Afghanistan. The treatment that Hassan receives primarily among other children is horrific. The ideas that Amir, the narrator, explains that were taught in the schools is dumbfounding. The treatment of the Taliban toward Sohrab, Hassan’s son is frightening. All of these are examples of how the author strikes the emotions of the reader through children.

Another way of which the author grasps the readers’ emotions is through building a bridge between the author and the reader through proximity. While the narrator does grow up in Afghanistan, the narrator later moves to Fremont, attends SJSU, and begins a life in San Francisco. At this point the reader views the narrator no longer as an Afghan, but as a peer. At this point Amir is no longer half way around the world, but a student in our class, or the man in the Volkswagon stationed next to us at a stop light. Then, through placing Amir back in his homeland, the narrator once again strikes the reader through sympathizing with the peer’s new emotions and struggles. The reader trusts the narrator, and the author, because Amir is now an American.

Kite Runner serves as propaganda because it deliberately conveys a message to the SJSU population. Because it is opening the eyes of many to look further into diversity, and further into the war of which we are a part of it is “good” propaganda. Propaganda tactics that the author used included the use of children and proximity to gain compassion for the narrator, and for a nation. This fictional novel is eye opening, and opens the door for discussion and growth among our SJSU campus community.

the Cover...
When looking through the September issue of Cosmo, many things boggled through my mind that had been discussed throughout class. I noticed myself not finding the magazine as interesting as I once had. In this sense I recognized the truth behind the idea of, as we change our taste in magazines changes as well. Also, the concept of reading magazines that seem to be directed toward an older audience, but don’t actually attract that population. Within Cosmo one of the articles was titled Everything you Need to Know About Your Thirties. While women in their thirties may still read cosmo, by no means is that their largest population. I found it interesting that the advertisement just one page over from this article was for Noxema face wash, and one page after that, Pro Active face wash. Correct me if I’m wrong, but many people in their thirties are not dealing with what kind of face wash to use.

Another aspect of this magazine that I noticed, and was almost ashamed of, was its message to women concerning men. It seemed as though every other article was how to please your man, how to get a man, or how to keep a man. The entire magazine was focused on women needing men and women needing to succumb to men to keep them happy or satisfied. Even advertising inferred some of these concepts. There was an advertisement for green apple trident of which two apples were in a bed together. It was slightly humorous, and almost just as disturbing. Although I am nowhere near my thirties, I can sense a change of reading material coming soon.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1159245403876026482006-09-25T21:33:00.000-07:002006-11-07T12:01:06.329-08:00Newspapers...
As we continue our journey and analysis of print versions vs. online or electronic versions I notice myself struggling to argue that print versions will never fade away. For example, one of the reasons it took me so long to complete this assignment, was because I found it to be out of my way to pick up the print version of the newspaper. On that same note, I noticed that I was only willing to do this assignment on a weekday, because those days the paper is sent directly to the residence halls, heaven forbid I should have to walk across the street to <st1:time minute="11" hour="19">Seven Eleven</st1:time> and spend my time or money on a newspaper!

Enough talk of my laziness. As for content I found many pros and cons to both styles. I enjoyed having my print version with me to leisurely read throughout the day. I was able to let pictures sway me toward reading certain articles, and also skim through articles that I may not normally read. These are two aspects that are not as strong online. Online is formatted much more strictly. It is set up so it is typically easy to find specific topics you may be searching for. Online I was able to think of articles I had read earlier, and easily navigate to them. Another example, within different sections, lets say the sports section, there are drop menus on the left of the screen that allow you to navigate by areas of interest. On the sports section there was a list of local sports and teams, and by simply clicking on your team of choice, lets say SJSU, you can get info on that team. (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/colleges/san_jose_state/) While this was convenient, if you do not know exactly what you want to read, the drop menus, and endless lists of topics may seem like a jumble of articles and words.

There is no doubt that to millions of Americans reading the morning newspaper with breakfast is a habit and a leisure they will not want to give up in the near future. However to many, the free and mostly organized online version may be more convenient. it Simple!
When thinking of media, many people’s minds direct them straight to commercial campaigns, celebrities, and paparazzi. With this week being fashion week in NYC I got to thinking about past, recent, and future fashion trends. In the fashion world of media much controversy and excitement has recently occurred due to GAP’s “Keep it Simple” campaign. As many have begun to notice, the skinny pant has been reintroduced, and Audrey Hepburn has become part of it. In this new GAP commercial campaign, ACDC’s hit “Back in Black” plays while clips of Hepburn dancing from the film Funny Face are shown.

While GAP representatives have been extremely zealous over this campaign, many Hepburn fans have mixed reviews. According to Kyle Andrew, vice president of Gap Marketing, this is in fact the first time in 12 years that a film clip of Hepburn has been given the authority to be used in a commercial campaign in North America. While many of Hepburn fan’s love these up beat commercials, there has been just as much if not more criticism concerning it. Hepburn has been a beauty and fashion icon for decades, and she is represented wonderfully in the commercials. While I love it, and think everyone should check it out, is it wrong to use these icons for the benefit of a company? Who is to tell when it is appropriate or when it is not? You can view the commercial on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk1MnEzvnLk. Enjoy…I hope!

can do anything you can do better, I can do anything better than you...
When looking into propaganda and its presence in our society, it is everywhere. Because we have a society based so strongly on advertising and capitalism many marketing campaigns can be construed as propaganda. With the beginning of the school year just passing, and pledging being such a topic in Greek life, I looked into the Greek system, specifically fraternities, as a form of propaganda. Each fraternity house will set up a tent, and explain to anyone who will give them eye contact, how they are the best house on campus. They will have a list of stereotypes to run through when referring to other houses, and this is considered a reliable and unbiased opinion?

On a more specific level, the secrecy among houses feeds into this propaganda. Most houses have a manual and or pledge manual. Pledges are typically required to carry it with them at all times, and if lost or stolen sever punishment is to follow. Within the manual lies the secrets, rituals, history and more about the specific fraternity. Through this manual, and through meetings, glorification of the fraternity occurs. It explains how the specific fraternity has morals and objectives that supersede the other organizations, and how ritual and secrecy is what will make them unified and unique. In my mind the entire thing screams propaganda. The system allows many, not all, individuals to feel a sense of belonging to an organization, while frowning upon other organizations for beliefs that have similar or same bases but cannot be vocally shared.

I hope I was able to word this in a way that conveys my thoughts appropriately. It is all sorted out quite clearly in my mind, but I hope my words were able to live up to my thoughts.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33575411.post-1158173362080106292006-09-13T11:48:00.000-07:002006-11-07T12:01:06.149-08:00"I'll Love you Forever, I'll Like you for Always..."
“I’ll love you forever. I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.” I can still feel my mom lying in my bed reading her favorite bed-time story to me. Sitting on my shelf at home still lies the same paper back book my mom has reread to me countless amounts of times. As I grow older I anticipate reading from the same book, and one day my child will read it to his or her child.

Because our society has taken such a turn toward technology it is understandable that there would be concern of print becoming obsolete. In my own opinion, I cannot even begin to fathom the idea of this becoming a reality. I find it crucial to have books, study guides, etc in print in order to jot notes, mark pages, leisurely read wherever I please, and much more. Currently, I find myself printing out even journal articles from online sources, simply because I cannot stand reading off of the bright computer background. Similarly, are people going to resort to the computer to read night-time stories to their children or grand children? There are many reasons as such, that lead me to believe that printed sources will not become extinct. However, what if the dollar wins, and people do choose to buy media on CD’s or retrieve them free online?

This has begun to happen, primarily with online journals. I find myself constantly searching through journals online, rather than trekking throughout the Basement of the King Library. When resources become so convenient, one gets “sucked in.” Another great example of this is the SJSU class schedule. While students were so blessed in the past to have an in print copy for only a dollar or so, incoming students only know the world of online class schedules. This, however, was not viewed a convenience. Many students had a fit when this happened, and that was because there was no choice…it was ONLY offered online.
JesLoebighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14538873103547943345noreply@blogger.com1
